THE EFFECT OF PRE-TREATMENT
TO THE MERBAU (Intsia bijuga O.K) SEED VIABILITY

ABSTRACT

The research has on “Effect of Pre-Treatment to the Merbau (Intsia bijuga O.K.) Seed Germination)” been conducted in the greenhouse of Faculty of Forestry Gadjah Mada University Yogyakata, from September 2003 to January 2005. This research was aimed to overcome seed dormancy of the merbau through providing a proper in pre- treatment in order to increase the germination and maintain the merbau seed viability.

The method used in the seed dormancy research was: a Randomized Completly Design (RCD) with 3 repetitions in which each experiment units was consisted of 100 seeds and described as follow : a0 = control, the seed filed and soaked in water as long as 4 hours = a1, 8 hours = a2, 12 hours = a3, 16 hours = a4; the seed filed and soaked in hot water (85oC) as long as 4 hours = b1, 8 hours = b2, 12 hours = b3, 16 hours = b4; the seed soaked in H2SO4 solution with concentration: 65% = c1, 75% = c2, 85% = c3, 95% = c4, (pre- treatment to the seed).

The result indicated that to overcome the seed dormancy of the merbau was shaled below, the proper pre- treatment was the seed filed and soaked in hot water as long as 8 hours (b2).
